Sexual Assault Awareness Month: 25 Years Stronger, Looking Back, Moving Forward

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). This year marks a significant milestone, as we recognize 25 years of education, advocacy, and survivor support. At the Law Offices of Frederick W. Nessler and Associates, we stand with survivors and remain committed to fighting for justice on their behalf.

What Is Sexual Assault Awareness Month?

Sexual Assault Awareness Month has been observed nationally every April since 2001. The campaign is organized by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) and is designed to raise public awareness about sexual violence, promote education and prevention, and connect survivors with resources and support.

This year's theme, 25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward, reflects the incredible progress that advocates, organizations, and survivors themselves have made over the past quarter century. It also serves as a reminder of how much work remains to be done.

Why This Month Matters

Sexual violence is far more widespread than many people realize. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly half of all women and more than 1 in 6 men in the United States have experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime. The vast majority of incidents go unreported, often because survivors fear they will not be believed, are unaware of their legal options, or are uncertain where to turn for help.

SAAM exists to change that. Through community events, social media campaigns, and educational outreach, this month helps break down the silence and stigma that too often surrounds sexual violence and empowers survivors to understand their rights and find the support they deserve.

You Have Legal Rights as a Survivor

Many survivors are unaware that beyond the criminal justice system, they may also have legal rights to pursue civil action against those responsible for their harm. A civil lawsuit is separate from any criminal case and can be brought regardless of whether criminal charges were filed or resulted in a conviction.

A civil claim can help survivors seek compensation for:

● Medical expenses, including therapy and mental health treatment

● Lost wages and diminished earning capacity

● Pain and suffering, emotional distress, and trauma

● Other damages resulting from the assault

Civil litigation gives survivors a voice and a path toward accountability and healing. You do not have to face this alone.
